Anyone who wants to know more about what shaped Tom McCall as a person needs to know about his remarkable mother, Dorothy Lawson McCall. She published two memoirs, "The Copper King's Daughter," which told about her growing up as the daughter of one of the richest men in America, and "Ranch Under the Rimrock," the tale of her early life on the central Oregon property where Tom McCall grew up. By Bill Hall, Lincoln County Commissioner Recently I had the chance to spend some time catching up with former Oregon Secretary of State Phil Keisling. We met in 1978 during the McCall campaign. Phil was a new graduate of Yale and was on the paid staff; I was a college freshman and a volunteer. How many young people have been inspired to public service by the McCall legacy? How many more will be when we make sure his story is told to a new generation? Get involved now! Tom McCall co-founded 1,000 Friends of Oregon in 1975 to provide ongoing advocacy for Oregon's land use system. This event is a great opportunity to learn more about Tom McCall and how you can be part of carrying on his legacy. McCall Society Speaker Series: Author Matt Love in Lincoln City Thursday evening, August 8 Reception: 5:30 PM, Presentation and Q&A: 6-7 PM Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Highway 101, Lincoln City Cost: Free and open to the public; donations accepted and appreciated. The Oregon Coast has long held special symbolic importance for Oregonians. As the state celebrates 100 years since Governor Oswald West shepherded landmark legislation providing permanent public access to Oregon beaches, the area is receiving special attention from advocates, researchers, and the public. Few contemporary writers have captured the spirit of the Oregon Coast with as talented and unique a voice as Matt Love. The founder of Newport-based Nestucca Spit Press, Love is the writer/editor of ten books about Oregon, most of them focusing on the Coast. He is a passionate defender of the Coast’s integrity and beauty. A lifelong educator, Matt Love’s books include Sometimes a Great Movie, a history of the filming ofSometimes a Great Notion; Gimme Refuge: The Education of a Caretaker, a memoir of his decade as caretaker of the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge; and Grasping Wastrels vs. Beaches Forever Inc., a chronicle of land use battles on the Coast. For his contributions to Oregon history and literature, he was awarded the Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award by Oregon Literary Arts in 2009. Love’s latest book is Of Walking in Rain, a unique work of nonfiction blending a variety of literary styles to celebrate this ubiquitous and beautiful part of life on the Oregon Coast. At the August event, Love will discuss current challenges on the Oregon Coast and present his ideas about how to preserve the health and beauty of the Oregon Coast for generations to come. Love will discuss the future of the Oregon Coast. Click here to visit the website of Love's publishing company, Nestucca Spit Press. Friends of Tom McCall raised the funds to erect this great statue of Tom on the banks of the Willamette in Salem. But Tom himself said "Heroes are not giant statues framed against a red sky. They are people who say, This is my community and it's my responsibility to make it better." Do your part to make your community and state better! Get involved today! http://www.tommccall.org/ |
