The Oregon Coast has long held special symbolic importance for Oregonians. As the state celebrates 100 years since Governor Oswald West shepherded landmark legislation providing permanent public access to Oregon beaches, the area is receiving special attention from advocates, researchers, and the public.
Few contemporary writers have captured the spirit of the Oregon Coast with as talented and unique a voice as Matt Love. The founder of Newport-based Nestucca Spit Press, Love is the writer/editor of ten books about Oregon, most of them focusing on the Coast. He is a passionate defender of the Coast’s integrity and beauty.
A lifelong educator, Matt Love’s books include Sometimes a Great Movie, a history of the filming ofSometimes a Great Notion; Gimme Refuge: The Education of a Caretaker, a memoir of his decade as caretaker of the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge; and Grasping Wastrels vs. Beaches Forever Inc., a chronicle of land use battles on the Coast. For his contributions to Oregon history and literature, he was awarded the Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award by Oregon Literary Arts in 2009.
Love’s latest book is Of Walking in Rain, a unique work of nonfiction blending a variety of literary styles to celebrate this ubiquitous and beautiful part of life on the Oregon Coast. At the August event, Love will discuss current challenges on the Oregon Coast and present his ideas about how to preserve the health and beauty of the Oregon Coast for generations to come.
